This is our NATIVE lupine that grows on the East coast. Considered a perennial, I treat lupines like a biennial, expecting the mother plant to eventually fade away but ALWAYS having plenty of babies at her feet. Seed sown in spring will grow leaves the first year, and flower the second year. Direct seed only as lupines do not transplant well. Learn to recognize the baby plants, they are quite distinctive with palm-shaped, star like leaves. I never deadhead my lupines. I let the seed ripen, then bend the stem over and strip the ripe seed off, sprinkling it where I want new lupines in years to come. It takes a few years to establish your lupines, but once you do, you will be SO excited! -Nancy
