Giant Autumn Crocus
Colchicum autumnale 'Giant'
Colchicums are such fun to grow. They appear in September, all flowers, no leaves. 'Giant' is a single pink variety with huge flowers. After being in the garden for a few years, it will bloom and bloom all during September, into early October. The fun part of growing these is figuring out what to plant them into so that when they bloom, you get a flower coming up through a different leaf. Black mondo grass, dwarf Nepeta (reblooming after a mid-summer cutback), other low foliage plants. Get creative! In the spring, up come big green, strap-like leaves and you think "what did I plant?" When you realize they are the Colchicum leaves, let them grow for as long as they want to. The healthier the leaves, the bigger the bulbs and the more flowers that fall. Colchicums are vole and deer proof. Plant as soon as you can in late summer/early fall.
